As city stages reopen again this fall, Canada’s performing-arts scene continues on its roller-coaster recovery, adjusting to inflation and other pandemic aftershocks. Having tried to lure audiences back and attract new ones with big ambitious swings first, and then with more conservative crowd-pleasers, theatres are now offering a mix of shows across the land.

Bruce Springsteen postponed shows on the E Street Band’s current tour more than once owing to vocal issues and peptic ulcer disease. Last month, Aerosmith not only cancelled its tour but retired from the road altogether after singer Steven Tyler failed to recover from a fractured larynx suffered in 2023. Tours by the Black Keys and Jennifer Lopez were called off because of weak ticket sales.

All the more reason to treasure the shows that do happen, including the following highly anticipated concerts that promise to be among the best of the fall season.

After a roller-coaster summer movie season that started off shaky owing to a strike-fuelled absence of titles – but eventually found its footing thanks to Deadpool, Wolverine and a few other copyrighted mainstays – this fall looks to be inching audiences back to prepandemic normalcy.

There are action blockbusters, serious-minded awards dramas, crowd-pleasing family adventures and even a few titles whose existence defies logical explanation.

Television may not go on summer holiday any more, but its viewers still do. So the fall remains an invitation to come back inside and get comfy on the couch in front of everyone’s favourite screen.

While those who get overwhelmed by choice when they open their streaming services may find it simpler to sink into new seasons of old favourites such as Survivor (Global, Sept. 18), Somebody Somewhere (HBO and Crave, Oct. 27) or Silo (Apple TV+, Nov. 15), there are plenty of new shows worth searching for.
