Ahead of Canada Day, The Globe’s film editor Barry Hertz has rounded up his picks for the top 25 Canadian actors (with some two-way ties, bringing the total number of choices up to 29). How do his picks stack up against Globe readers’ favourites?
It’s tough work setting parameters around what exactly is “Canadian” culture. Even Ottawa is struggling with it in its rollout of the Online Streaming Act. Hertz explains that this list is limited to performers whose careers are inseparable from Canadian culture itself, but not necessarily people who have only acted in Canadian productions. This means some big names with weak ties to the country have been omitted.
