These Toronto buyers had spent several months shopping for a large house close to family in Whitby, about 60 kilometres east of the downtown core. Their offers on two other houses came up short and they were determined not to lose the chance to own this four-bedroom home on a premium 70- by 170-foot lot abutting green space. They were quick to the punch with an offer $202,000 over the asking price.

“There were two we offered on – one we did not go ahead with and the other one we were outbid – and it’s for the better because they loved this one the most,” said the buyer’s agent, Ira Jelinek.

“We didn’t want to get involved in bidding with others with showings coming up, so we just gave what we were comfortable with, and what the sellers would like.”

What they got

Earlier this year, this two-storey house with a double garage was stripped to the studs and modernized with over $500,000 in upgrades, such as four lavish bathrooms and an upscale kitchen with an island and a butler’s pantry.

There are fireplaces in three entertaining areas, including one in the basement. Meanwhile, a double-height ceiling, a bank of windows and sliding doors to the patio and saltwater pool add pizzazz to the family room.

“It almost has a bungalow feel but with a second storey,” said Mr. Jelinek.

“But there’s an opportunity to have a main floor bedroom if they needed.”

For now, its current state is flawless. “It’s a spectacular place, and the outside has a beautiful pool,” Mr. Jelinek said.

“It’s on a big lot, and the neighbourhood is very quiet. I was outside for an hour in the backyard, and we heard nothing but birds and trees blowing in the wind.”
