What’s happening today at the Olympics: Canada earns silver in women’s beach volleyball; Gold in 4x100-metre men’s relay; Japan wins breaking’s first gold

Olympic highlights for Aug. 9

• Beach volleyball: Canadian beach volleyball duo Melissa Humana-Paredes and Brandie Wilkerson claimed silver against Brazil, the first-ever silver medal for Canada in Olympic women’s volleyball.
• Track: Andre De Grasse and Canada’s men’s team took a stunning gold in the 4x100-metre relay, a marquee event of the track meet at the Paris Olympics.
• Canoe: Duo Katie Vincent and Sloan MacKenzie won bronze for Canada in the women’s canoe double 500-metre event, only 0.06 seconds behind silver medalists, Ukraine.
• Weightlifting: Boady Santavy ended his 89-kg classification weightlifting event with a ‘Did Not Finish’ after an apparent injury.
• Diving: Canadians Rylan Wiens and Nathan Zsombor-Murray will advance to the semi-finals of the men’s 10-metre platform diving event after placing third and 10th in the preliminary round.
• Breaking: Japan’s b-girl Ami won gold at the Olympics’ first breaking event by spinning, flipping and toprocking past a field of 16 dancers Friday in a high-energy competition that may not return for future Games.
• In case you missed it: Canada’s Maude Charron won silver in the women’s 59-kg weightlifting event Thursday. She previously won gold in Tokyo in the women’s 64-kg event which no longer exists in the Olympic program.

Here’s what happened yesterday, Aug. 9, at the Olympics

• Wrestling: Canada’s Hannah Taylor lost to United States competitor Helen Louise Maroulis in the battle for the bronze medal in women’s wrestling.
• Canoe sprint: Courtney Stott and Natalie Davison placed seventh in the Final B round of 500-metre kayak doubles. On the men’s side, Pierre-Luc Poulin and Simon McTavish were second in Final B of 500-metre kayak doubles while Connor Fitzpatrick was sixth in Final B of the 1,000-metre canoe singles event.
• Golf: The women finish their third round of individual stroke play, with Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., in 13th place with fellow Canadian Alena Sharp of Hamilton in 44th place.
• Soccer: Germany won bronze for women’s soccer after defeating Spain 1-0, but Spain’s men’s team managed to take gold after a 5-3 win against France.
• Track: Canada’s Marco Arop placed eighth in the semi-finals for the men’s 800-metre and will compete in the finals at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow. Meanwhile, the Canadian women’s 4x100-metre relay team finished sixth in Friday’s Olympic final at Stade de France and the women’s 4x400 relay team qualified for Saturday’s final.
• Athletics: Canadian world silver medalist Sarah Mitton finished last in the women’s shot put final. Germany’s Yemisi Ogunleye won the gold medal with her final throw of 20.00 metres.
• Boxing: Algeria’s Imane Khelif won the gold medal in the 66-kg weight class on Friday, defeating 32-year-old Yang Liu of China in a unanimous decision. The tournament has been overshadowed by a gender controversy surrounding Khelif and another female boxer, Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan.

What to watch for today, Aug. 10, at the Olympics

• Golf: The women’s individual stroke play will continue with its fourth and final round Saturday at 3 a.m. ET.
• Breaking: Canadian break-dancer Phil Wizard is poised for the podium as the sport will crown its first Olympic champions after today’s competition, which begins at 10 a.m. ET. He will look to join the go e set for the 4x400-metre relay finals at 3:14 p.m. ET
• Soccer: The women’s gold-medal match takes place at 11 a.m. ET with Brazil going against Team USA. Defending champions Canada was bested in the quarter-finals by Germany in the penalty round after ending regulation time with a score of 0-0.
• Track: Canada’s Marco Arop will compete in for the men’s 800-metre final on 1:05 p.m. ET after qualifying Friday. At 1:50 p.m. Canadian Thomas Fafard will compete in the men’s 5,000-metre race while Team Canada’s women’s are set for the 4x400-metre relay finals at 3:14 p.m. ET.
• Basketball: Team USA is once again in a gold-medal match, this time against host country France in men’s basketball at 3:30 p.m. ET. Team Canada fell to the host in the quarter-finals with a score of 82-73.
